My name is Matthew Boeh.
I’m a computer programmer living in Portland, Oregon. I am interested in new ideas. My main proficiency is in Ruby. I’ve also worked quite a bit in C and Lua, and I’m familiar enough with Java and Python to find my way around. I’m currently interested in increasing my familiarity with Java and learning OCaml, Rust, and Clojure.
Outside technology, I’m interested in politics, feminism, labor issues, history, amateur linguistics, amateur philosophy, cultural/media criticism, food, comedy, video games, and music (especially hip-hop, funk, punk, and noise).
My politics are an unfashionable combination of Old and New Left. There are two quotes that have most strongly informed my ethics and politics:
Your Honor, years ago I recognized my kinship with all living beings, and I made up my mind that I was not one bit better than the meanest on earth. I said then, and I say now, that while there is a lower class, I am in it, and while there is a criminal element I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free.
– Eugene Victor Debs, Statement To The Court
“It is our suffering that brings us together. It is not love. Love does not obey the mind, and turns to hate when forced. The bond that binds us is beyond choice. We are brothers. We are brothers in what we share. In pain, which each of us must suffer alone, in hunger, in poverty, in hope, we know our brotherhood. We know it, because we have had to learn it. We know that there is no help for us but from one another, that no hand will save us if we do not reach out our hand. And the hand that you reach out is empty, as mine is. You have nothing. You possess nothing. You own nothing. You are free. All you have is what you are, and what you give.”
– Shevek in Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Dispossessed
I have not been very good at practicing these ideas in my life, but I try to hold to them as much as possible.
The purpose of this site is to discuss things I’m interested in. Much of the content will likely be about my life’s work as a programmer, but I do not intend to limit myself to that. I promise not to write about sex or bodily functions, but other than that I hope readers can just pass over content they find uninteresting.
If you’d like to talk, I’m available via email at m at mboeh dot com. You can check out my work at GitHub.
